Sponsoring Tibetans Living in Tibet

Since the invasion of Tibet in 1949 by the Communist Chinese, over one million Tibetans have died as a direct result of the occupation. More than six thousand monasteries -- centers of Tibetan culture and learning -- have been looted and razed to the ground.

This ongoing brutal occupation and cultural genocide in Tibet by the Communist Chinese continues to force many Tibetans to escape into exile by making a perilous journey across the Himalayas to Nepal and India. Many arrive malnourished, frostbitten, traumatized and destitute. Among these new arrivals are large numbers of children, nuns and monks. The Tibetan government-in-exile immediately goes to work to find placement for the new arrivals in such settings as a monastery, a nunnery, the Tibetan Children's Village, or with relatives, friends, or foster parents.

This constant influx of refugees is a tremendous strain on the resources of the Tibetan government. Sponsoring Tibetans living in exile is a way in which we can lend support.

For a donation of $3.50 a month, you can provide a scholarship for a child in a Tibetan kindergarten.

For $20 – $30 a month, you can sponsor a child to receive an education at one of the Tibetan refugee schools.

For $25 a month, you can support a nun or monk in a nunnery or a monastery.

The Tibetan Children's Village program is $30 a month; this is for orphaned, semi-orphaned and destitute Tibetan children.

Sponsors of scholarships for the Yong Ling Kindergarten program receive drawings and schoolwork from the children at the kindergarten, without establishing an individual relationship or an ongoing commitment of support. Sponsors of monks, nun, and children other than those in the kindergarten program receive a photograph and biography of the individual being sponsored, plus regular letters or progress reports. All sponsors are encouraged to visit the programs and individual(s) they sponsor.

One hundred percent of your monthly contribution goes directly to the support of the person being sponsored. We do not deduct any administrative fees. Instead, we ask each sponsor and donor to add an additional donation to support our work — of an amount chosen by the donor.
All contributions are tax-deductible in the United States to the maximum extent allowed by law (for further information, see our listing on GuideStar.
